Advocate

An Advocate is someone who stands beside you and works solely on your behalf, and at your direction. The main role of an Advocate is to respond to the needs of individual people, whether they have a disability, they belong to the older community, minority group, are indigenous Australians, or children. This is done by providing independent support and information and may involve speaking, writing and acting for people in order to advocate against unjust and unfair things happening in their lives. An Advocate needs to be able to identify people treated unjustly, clarify the issue, and investigate appropriate responses, provide accurate information, be up to date with current edicts and the effects they may have on the client, and encourage participation of individuals and social groups in accessing information about consumer rights and protections in relation to the provision of services, and accessing mainstream services.
