Studying social science (Honours)

With increasing competition in all sectors of employment, students who graduate with an Honours degree have a distinct advantage. It is often considered by employers as an added skill and has been used by previous graduates to pursue higher positions and salaries. You can develop and carry out research on a topic of interest, potentially leading to further academic study such as a PhD.

If you have completed a Bachelor of Social Science or related discipline, and have a minimum credit grade point average, Honours will give you a distinct advantage in the workplace. An Honours year is an opportunity to consolidate your learning by undertaking advanced study and demonstrate your skills by carrying out an independent research project. It is also the pathway to research higher degree study.

Common areas of employment for Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) graduates include social research, management and policy work for government and non-government agencies and the private sector relating to your major, for instance graduates of the welfare specialisation may find work with a variety of government and private welfare agencies.
