The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) at the University of Newcastle will provide you with the theoretical knowledge, practical experience and attributes to drive clinical leadership in health care while also providing a framework to influence the management of pharmaceutical services in Australia and globally.
You will be equipped to provide a vital primary health care role as you counsel people on the best use and management of medications, provide advice on the symptoms and management of common ailments, prepare and formulate medications and educate the community on a wide range of health and well-being matters.
At the University of Newcastle, you will use innovative and state-of-the art educational technology to supplement your face-to-face lectures, tutorials and experiential learning, through clinical placements and simulated learning environments.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) is a four year embedded honours degree and will set you on your way to becoming a registered pharmacist.

Clinical placements start in your first year of study and continue throughout your degree providing you with substantial clinical experience in a variety of settings both locally and nationally as part of the degree. This ensures you are continually putting into practice the theory and hands-on skills you learn throughout the degree.
You will gain clinical experience in a variety of health settings, which may include community facilities, hospitals, rural pharmacies, aged care facilities.
To prepare you for your clinical placements, you will build practical skills through inter-professional simulated learning activities in our fully functioning demonstration pharmacy, hospital based simulation wards and the Hunter New England Simulation Centre.
The clinical placement component of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) is substantial and occurs in a range of diverse clinical contexts throughout the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast and University Department of Rural Health sites.

As a pharmacy graduate, you will have the opportunity to access diverse and exciting employment opportunities in the community, hospital, industry and government sectors.
You will not only dispense and supply medicine, but can provide specialised clinical services such as home medication review and work in inter-professional teams to ensure the safe and appropriate use of medication.
To practice as a pharmacist in Australia, you need to obtain general registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia, after completing an additional year post graduation as an Intern Pharmacist.
A prescribed period of 1824 hours of supervised practice as an Intern Pharmacist must be carried out after successful completion of the pharmacy program. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, through the Pharmacy Board of Australia, allows registered pharmacists to practice as a pharmacist in all Australian states and territories.
