Is music/arts for you?

A combined degree offers greater breadth of learning, enhancing the academic and professional qualities gained in each separate degree. At the same time, it recognises the increasing need for students to graduate with multidisciplinary skills. In this degree, you can study in the area of music as well as arts and complete two qualifications over four years of full-time study.

The flexibility of this combined degree allows you to pursue areas that present the best challenges, the most interest and the greatest enjoyment while studying. You will have the opportunity to acquire the skills of analysis, research and logic: the skills which form the basis for any successful career as well as acquiring specialised skills in music and preparing students for performance to a professional standard.

Qualified in this combined degree, you can look for a career as a:

  • freelance musician
  • professional orchestra player
  • music producer in recording or mixing
  • composer
  • musical director
  • community or private music teacher
  • university lecturer.

Just to name a few.

The arts side of your qualification can offer careers in business, government, management and administration, public relations, human resource management, marketing and teaching, depending on your majors.

Benefits of a combined degree

A combined degree means that you can achieve two qualifications in one go. You will have the advantage of graduating with two degrees, in less time than it would take to complete them separately.

For example, if you are interested in both music and arts, you can complete the requirements for both degrees by choosing the Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Arts. After four years of full time study, you will graduate with two degree qualifications. Study them separately and it can take you up to six years full-time.

A combined degree will increase your career options, skills and knowledge, enhancing your academic and professional qualities, making you more desirable to employers. You will have more variety in your studies and satisfy more than one of your interests – you may be keen on drama and biology, this way you can study both.

There are some special requirements with combined degrees. Students must undertake a program of study that incorporates the requirements for each individual degree.

Additional entry requirements

As well as submitting a UAC application and meeting the University minimum academic entry requirement you must apply directly to the Conservatorium for an audition.

Audition dates

Early Round: 24 - 28 September 2012 - Applications to be submitted by 31 August 2012

Second Round: 26 November - 14 December 2012 - Applications submitted by 26 October 2012.

Applications are available from the Faculty of Education and Arts or by calling (02) 4921 8900. A satisfactory audition/interview is a requirement of admission, together with an acceptable level of attainment in year 12 or equivalent. Auditions are held in May-June (for mid-year entry) and October-December each year. At the audition you are required to perform three pieces of music in contrasting styles or genres, providing your own accompaniment or CD backing where required. A list of local accompanists is also available from the Conservatorium. Composers are required to submit a portfolio of three compositions or soundworks displaying contrasting forms or diversity. Applicants also sit aural and theory tests, which include basic music theory, music notation, listening, rhythmic and pitch perception. If you do not undertake the audition, you will not be eligible for an offer.
