Why study mathematics (Honours) at UoN?

With increasing competition in all sectors of employment, students who graduate with an Honours degree have a distinct advantage. It is often considered by employers as an added skill and has been used by previous graduates to pursue higher positions and salaries. You can develop and carry out research on a topic of interest, potentially leading to further academic study such as a PhD.

Skills in mathematics are of value wherever real world problems must be solved in areas such as manufacturing or scheduling. The private sector need statisticians in management and technical roles, in areas such as finance, bioinformatics, biotechnology, health research, marketing, insurance and engineering. In addition, government agencies and research institutions employ statisticians to design, collect analyse and interpret data.

The Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) is a one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) degree that allows you to further develop your specific areas of interest and your research skills.

The University of Newcastle is a leader in research, home to the Research Centre in Complex Dynamic Systems and Control as well as research groups in discrete mathematics, functional analysis and mathematical modelling and physical systems. You have the opportunity to be involved with research at the forefront of your field.

  • industry
  • international finance

Mathematics graduates often enter research, management and strategic planning, or work in insurance companies, taxation or computer enterprises.
