Why study fine art (Honours) at UoN?

With increasing competition in all sectors of employment, students who graduate with an Honours degree have a distinct advantage. It is often considered by employers as an added skill and has been used by previous graduates to pursue higher positions and salaries. You can develop and carry out research on a topic of interest, potentially leading to further academic study such as a PhD.

Students who perform well during the Bachelor of Fine Art may undertake a further year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study to obtain an Honours degree. The Honours degree allows students to further develop their specific areas of interest.

On the Newcastle campus at Callaghan, Honours level courses are available in: 2-D art (painting/drawing, printmaking), 3-D art (ceramics, fibres/textiles, sculpture), photomedia or art history/theory.

The University boasts a vibrant autonomous student exhibition venue (Watt Space Galleries) and a superb art gallery on-campus which hosts important national and international exhibitions. We also have an active Artist-in-Residence program and benefit from established links with national and international exchange programs.

The fine art degree is designed to ensure that you are able to gain basic knowledge across a range of fine art disciplines, and encounter ongoing studio-based experience. The art history/theory courses introduce you to current fine art theory and research methods. In the studio program, you will experience 2D Art (including drawing, painting and printmaking), 3D Art (including fibres/textiles, sculpture and ceramics) and photomedia. There is also an optional study in video.

As well as becoming artists, graduates may work in art education, community arts, galleries and museums, or other art related fields.

The degree offers high quality facilities in all studio areas including a metal casting foundry, paper making mill and the only facility in any institution in Australia that manufactures paints, pastels and watercolours on campus.
