Why study exercise sport science (Honours) at UoN?

The Bachelor of Exercise Sport Science (Honours) degree is offered as an additional year to the undergraduate program. The Honours degree consists of a fourth year of full-time study (one year) or the equivalent part-time study (two years). Courses are offered on a semester basis, i.e. two semesters per year. The Honours degree consists of a research project on a topic determined in consultation with your research supervisor. The degree also involves a skills development strand to assist you in the development of your research skills and the writing of your research thesis. Honours is highly regarded by potential employers and provides entry into a research career.

The University of Newcastle is a leader in research and you will have the opportunity to be involved with research at the forefront of your field. A new exercise science facility at the Central Coast campus features high quality laboratories and a gym for practical training.

Research within exercise and sport science is diverse and wide-ranging, encompassing areas such as exercise physiology and biomechanics. Our research focus ranges from the general population through to elite athletes.

Examples of current research interests include:

  • motion analysis of field sports athletes
  • strength training and nutritional supplementation 
  • compression garments
  • low back pain and women in sport.

As a graduate of the exercise and sport science (Honours) degree you will qualify for a wide range of careers. As more and more people realise the importance of exercise for our health, the career opportunities for exercise scientists are expanding. Examples include careers in a variety of roles in both the public and private sector.

The sports industry offers opportunities for graduates to work as:

  • sport scientists
  • strength and conditioning coaches
  • development officers and consultants.

The health industry employs graduates in health education/promotion, as cardiac/respiratory technicians and as exercise scientists. Honours graduates are in high demand in the above careers. An Honours degree can also lead to a research career in academia or elsewhere.

The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (Honours) is only offered at the Central Coast campus at Ourimbah.
