Why study environmental engineering at UoN?

A career in environmental engineering will see you design and manage sustainable solutions for complex environmental problems, including water pollution and soil erosion.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental) has a strong multidisciplinary focus reflecting the fact that environmental engineers work with other environmental specialists. You will be taught in modern laboratory facilities by teaching staff who are recognised internationally for outstanding research and for being leaders in their field.

Environmental engineers are often employed as consultants to prepare environmental impact assessments for major projects. The Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental) will teach you how to assess and model the potential damage and long-term problems for the environment resulting from human activity, and how to devise environmentally sustainable and economic solutions. You will also be prepared for a career that will see you interact closely with the environment and a range of people.

The University of Newcastle has been ranked in the world’s top 120 universities for engineering and technology (QS rankings 2010).

Combined degrees

There are a couple of combined degree options if you're interested in a Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental).

The following combinations can be completed in five years, when you study full-time:

The Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental) uses the WAM as a measure for determining Honours.

There are three levels of Honours.

Honours Class 1 - you will require a minimum WAM of 77 and a minimum mark of 75 in the research courses (at least 30 units).

Honours Class II, Division 1 - you will require a minimum WAM of 72 and a minimum mark of 65 in the research courses (at least 30 units).

Honours Class II, Division 2 - you will require a minimum WAM of 67 and a minimum mark of 65 in the research courses (at least 30 units).

Performance is based on a three year WAM where 2000, 3000 and 4000 level courses are weighted.

Become a graduate in demand

Environmental engineers from the University of Newcastle are in high demand locally and throughout Australia. The wide range of skills developed throughout our degree enables graduates to work in a large variety of key occupations.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental) will prepare you to pursue a career in consultancy, design and development, mining and construction industries and management in private consultancies, government corporations such as those that deal with water and the responsibility for the environment, infrastructure, planning and natural resources.

You could find yourself working for a firm of consultants preparing environmental impact assessments for major projects or in critically analysing these assessments, perhaps for state or local government.

The degree could also lead to a role with a regulatory authority where knowledge of pollution generation and abatement systems for various industries is important, or you may be required to devise environmentally sustainable and economic solutions to environmental problems.

Opportunities also exist in government departments and in the mining, forestry and construction industries.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental) is accredited by Engineers Australia and other affiliated international bodies.

Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical)

My success started as an engineering student at the University of Newcastle, where I designed a train lighting system. It had a massive impact on the quality of the journey for tens of thousands of commuters. From that first success, many more grew and I enjoyed bigger projects, an international client-list, and more opportunities to shape the world. It's been only six years since my first breakthrough, but now I'm managing a multi-million dollar engineering business. It's a great life, and a lot is down to the Uni's support.
