Visual communication design with Honours at the University of Newcastle

Visual Communications Design (Honours)Visual communication design, also referred to as design or graphic design, is a creative process concerned with the development of visual ideas to communicate information in ways that engage audiences and influence human perceptions or behaviour.

As a professional visual communicator, you create solutions to communication problems using media such as print, press, TV, radio, web and digital media. The field of graphic design is an exciting area of study and research due to a rapidly changing technological environment and the development of new ways to communicate.

When you study visual communication design, you will gain experience in advertising, web design, animation, illustration, photography, typography, drawing, branding, digital design, games and virtual worlds, communication and graphic design. These elements combine together to give you the knowledge to become a highly creative visual communicator.

An Honours degree in visual communication design gives you a distinct advantage in marketplace. You will have the opportunity to develop your creative and analytical skills, to think critically, creatively, imaginatively and tenaciously, as well as enhance your research and technical skills. You will also graduate with in-depth knowledge of the profession and industry climate, a professional portfolio, project management and leadership/art direction and design production expertise in print and digital media.

The graphic design industry offers career opportunities that are limited only by the imagination. A graphic designer's role can be vast and varied and may encompass the development of visual material for both print and digital media. This may include conceptual design, print production, advertising, publishing, film and television, internet, science and technology, packaging and signage. Electronic and digital tools with sophisticated software are an integral part of design practice.

Offered by the School of Creative Industries through the Faculty of Education and Arts, the Bachelor of Visual Communication Design (Honours) is a one year full-time (or equivalent part-time) degree designed to allow you to further specialise to an advanced level of professionalism and academic achievement. It also provides a pathway to research degree studies.
