THERE IS NO NEW INTAKE INTO THIS PROGRAM.

FROM 2010, THIS PROGRAM IS AVAILABLE FOR CONTINUING STUDENTS ONLY.

If you are interested in studying Secondary Teaching, please refer to the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts program handbook: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/12214.html

For those interested in Primary Teaching, please refer to the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)/Bachelor of Arts program handbook: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/12215.html or the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)/Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies program handbook: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/12216.html

A good teacher can have a profound effect on a young person's outlook on education, their career aspirations and life generally. If you have a real commitment to helping young people get the most out of their education, a passion for learning, rapport with people and a sense of humour, then you will find teaching a truly rewarding professional career where you can make a difference.

The Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Ourimbah Campus) is a four-year integrated double degree program that prepares students for Primary teaching or teaching English in Secondary Schools, depending on the program structure undertaken.

Students may apply to complete an alternative program commencing in Year 4 in order to qualify for employment as a Special Education teacher, in addition to their teaching specialisation.

Study a language (Click to hide)(Section detail has been hidden from print)Back to top

All students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

Practical Experience (Click to hide)(Section detail has been hidden from print)Back to top

The School of Education within the Faculty of Education and Arts is committed to achieving the University of Newcastle's number one strategic priority of making `high quality education of professionals a defining feature' of study at the university. To achieve this strategic priority our programs incorporate both traditional and innovative approaches to professional experience.

Students will complete the equivalent of 90 days professional experience in relevant school settings in a four-year Bachelor program. This matches the current NSW Institute of Teachers (NSWIT) requirements for professional experience in four-year undergraduate initial teacher education programs.

Professional experience may involve placement in schools in a variety of geographic regions outside the local area. Professional experiences are supervised by school or university staff, and students are expected to satisfy a range of professional teaching competencies as part of the successful completion of the program.

Professional Accreditation (Click to hide)(Section detail has been hidden from print)Back to top

Graduates of an accredited initial teacher education program will be eligible for registration with the NSW Institute of Teachers, and can pursue careers as teachers or educators in both the NSW Department of Education and Training, Catholic Education and Independent school systems; and in public and private sectors both nationally and internationally.

Prior to graduation the Department of Education and Training requires evidence that students have developed computer competencies in the areas of basic skills and pedagogy. Students are required to satisfactorily demonstrate these compulsory competencies either by completing INFO1010 (Primary only) or Computer Competencies as an additional program milestone requirement. For more information, please refer to the Computer Competencies course link on BlackBoard: https://blackboard.newcastle.edu.au/webapps/login/

International Students (Click to hide)(Section detail has been hidden from print)Back to top

International students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English language proficiency requirements. All International Students enrolled in the program will be provided with an orientation to familiarise them with the rules, expectations, facilities and services offered by the University. Please visit http://www.newcastle.edu.au/students/international/student-support/ to find out more about the support services available to international students.

Special Needs (Click to hide)(Section detail has been hidden from print)Back to top

Students with disabilities who require reasonable adjustments to undertake their program should contact the Disability Support Service before semester or early in the semester. Some adjustments need up to 4 weeks lead time to organise, so it is imperative that early contact is made. The Disability Support Service and relevant Faculty and School officers will work together to ensure reasonable adjustments are provided in a timely manner.

Please note: All students must fulfil the inherent requirements of the programs and courses they are undertaking. While reasonable adjustments can be made, these adjustments cannot compromise academic integrity. It is the student's responsibility to check all the requirements of courses, and consider the effects of any medical condition or disability on their ability to complete course requirements. Please visit http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/disability/ for more information.

Requirements and Structure Cont...

Secondary English Teaching Specialisation continues:

Modern and Ancient History are separate teaching areas. Students who wish to teach Modern History in NSW, must complete HIST1051 and 40 units from the Modern History minor directed course list. A maximum of 10 units at 1000 level is permitted from this list. Students should ensure that their course choices from the Modern History minor directed course list cover Australian history, contact and Aboriginal history, early modern history, historiography and modern history. Students who wish to teach Ancient History in NSW, must complete HIST1051 and 40 units from the Ancient History minor directed course list. Requirements and Structure Back to top

The Bachelor of Teaching / Bachelor of Arts (Ourimbah) program requires the successful completion of 320 units.

Many course areas require students to complete a prescribed sequence of courses. This means that students must enrol in courses in a particular order to satisfy the requirements. Such requirements are mandatory when they lead to professional accreditation or when they involve the progressive acquisition of knowledge and/or skills. Failure to undertake courses in the required sequence may result in timetable clashes and/or the inability to complete the award in minimum time. Courses are subject to annual review and course options may change. For further details contact the Ourimbah Student Hub. The Education component consists of courses offered in four strands: Teaching and Learning (including Special Education); Professional Preparation (Primary) or Specialist Teaching Methods (Secondary); Professional Experience; and Research.

Primary Teaching Specialisation: Primary students complete curriculum method courses for all six key learning areas of the curriculum, and then choose discipline courses to support those key learning areas. The six key learning areas of the curriculum are: English; Mathematics; Science and Technology; Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE); Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE); Creative Arts.

The Arts component consists of prescribed courses and Key Learning Area (KLA) discipline study courses. Students select a total of 70 units from the list of KLA discipline study courses (maximum 20 units of KLA courses at 1000 level). At least 40 units should be undertaken in one particular KLA.

Secondary English Teaching Specialisation: Students who wish to teach ENGLISH in NSW must complete 70 units from the English major directed course list. A maximum of 20 units at 1000 level is permitted from this list. Students should ensure that their course choices from the English major directed course list include at least 30 units of textual studies including literature. Other choices may include courses in communications, creative writing, linguistics and media studies.

Students who wish to teach DRAMA in NSW must complete ARTC1450 and 40 units from the Drama minor directed course list. A maximum of 10 units at 1000 level is permitted from this list. Students should ensure that their course choices from the Drama minor directed course list cover performance, production, theory and preferably Australian drama.

Modern & Ancient History continues in 'Additional Information'.
