Description (Click to hide)(Section detail has been hidden from print)Back to top

Students commencing the Bachelor of Social Science in 2005 or after should refer to the new Bachelor of Social Science program.

The Bachelor of Social Science degree focuses on the techniques of analysis, theory and insight offered the the social sciences. Social Science is especially concerned with theories about life cycles, gender, class, race, work, social justice and social organisation. Its theories are the result of systematic thinking, observation and reflection. Social Science theory and research contribute to political and moral debate in society, rather than dictate precise answers to social problems.

Study a language (Click to hide)(Section detail has been hidden from print)Back to top

All students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

Requirements and Structure Back to top

Qualification for the Bachelor of Social Science award requires completion of 240 units which comprises:

  • Not more than 80 units at 1000 level;
  • A minimum of 180 units of courses approved as Group A courses by the Faculty Board of which 40 units must be at 3000 level and 40 units must be at 2000 or 3000 level.

Group A course areas available as full sequences at the Ourimbah Campus:

  • Aboriginal Social Practices
  • Australia Asia-Pacific Studies
  • Childhood and Youth Studies
  • Gender Studies
  • Government and Society: Theory and Policy Studies
  • Societies and Cultures
  • Welfare Studies

Some courses may also be available in other areas from time to time, e.g. Geography. Other areas may be available at the Callaghan Campus.

  • Not more than 60 units of Group B Courses, which can be selected from other available undergraduate courses, either from within the Ourimbah Campus or from elsewhere.

It is usual practice for a student to select four course areas at 1000 level and to select major areas of study once an interest and skill has been realised.

While 1000 level studies are restricted to a maximum of 80 units, there is no maximum number of units for studies at 2000 or 3000 level.

Full-time enrolment (80 units per year) will enable program completion in three years. Students may enrol in less than 80 units per year, and completion will take proportionately longer.

Many course areas require students to complete a prescribed sequence of courses. This means that students must enrol in courses in a particular order to satisfy the requirements. Such requirements are mandatory when they lead to professional accreditation or when they involve the progressive acquisition of knowledge and/or skills.

Before enrolling, students must consult the School responsible for the course area to ensure that they are satisfying its requirements. Failure to undertake courses in the required sequence may result in timetable clashes and/or the inability to complete the award in minimum time.

Not all courses will be offered each semester.
