Description (Click to hide)(Section detail has been hidden from print)Back to top

This program is available only to students who commenced the Bachelor of Science at Ourimbah prior to 2005. New students interested in studying Science and students who commenced in 2005 and beyond should refer to the Bachelor of Science file (covering both Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses).

This degree gives students the basic skills and knowledge to contribute to scientific development in many areas of technology, industry agriculture or the information revolution.

It can be a foundation for a career in the vast field of Science, or an excellent general education providing skills in problem solving and research.

A science degree can be generalist and vocational at the same time. Universities have offered science degrees for centuries, yet they remain fashionable, useful and exciting.

Study a language (Click to hide)(Section detail has been hidden from print)Back to top

All students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

Requirements and Structure Back to top

The degree is completed over three years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time) and requires students to pass courses totalling 240 units.

Full-time students undertake at least six science courses in their first year (60 units at 1000 level) selected from at least three Group A disciplines, such as Biological Sciences, Sport Science & Physical Activity, and Sustainable Resource Management. A further 20 units of courses are selected from the remaining Group A Science courses (Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology or approved Group B (listed below).

In each year, within each course area, there is a range of courses from which to choose. It is compulsory to undertake courses in at least one Science area for three years to achieve that is known as a Major Sequence. A Science student can major in two areas or concentrate on one area at 3000 level. A minimum of 60 units must be taken at 2000 level and at 3000 level.
