What you will study

Bachelor of Environmental Science and ManagementA degree in environmental science and management incorporates knowledge from a wide range of fields including biology, ecology, chemistry, geology and the social sciences to understand human impacts on the environment and to develop ways to address these problems.

When you study the Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management at the University of Newcastle you will learn about:

  • Biological and earth processes
  • Environmental planning and impact assessment
  • Environmental remote sensing and computer-based mapping
  • Environmental sampling and data analysis
  • Environmental values, sustainability and ethics
  • Land management
  • Social development and the environment.

Majors

You will also have the opportunity to undertake a major. A major is an area you can specialise in within your degree. It allows you to gain detailed skills and a strong understanding of key principles in your chosen speciality. 

The Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management allows you to choose from one of the four majors:

  • Earth systems – you will be able to focus on climatology and soils, climate change, river basin processes, protection and management of waterways and catchments and global change
  • Ecosystems and biodiversity – you will be able to focus on ecology and conservation and management of flora and fauna
  • Marine science – you will be able to focus on the biology, ecology, protection and management of estuaries, fisheries and coral reefs
  • Sustainability – you will be able to focus on human geography, ecology, sustainability, social research, environmental economics, leisure, tourism and environmental issues, globalisation, program management, policy development and evaluation


This environmental science degree can be completed in three years of full time study (or equivalent part-time) and can be undertaken at our Newcastle campus (Callaghan) or the Central Coast campus (Ourimbah).

If you perform well in your Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management you are encouraged to undertake another year of study to obtain an Honours degree, which will give you a competitive edge and enhance your career prospects.
