This program will be discontinued at the end of 2014, with a new Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Electrical)/Bachelor of Mathematics program commencing from Semester 1, 2015.
Existing students continuing to study with the University of Newcastle in 2015, will automatically be transferred into the new program.
All existing students affected by this change, will be advised prior to enrolment for 2015.

This combined degree program provides students with an opportunity to undertake concurrent study in electrical engineering and mathematics and complete two awards. In general, a combined degree program offers greater breadth of learning, enhancing the academic and professional qualities gained in each separate degree. At the same time, it recognises the increasing need for students to graduate with multidisciplinary skills.
This wide-ranging program includes study of diverse aspects of power generated and distribution, telecommunications, signal processing, and analogue and digital electronics whilst also providing extensive mathematics skills.

Please Note: This program is not available to International Students.
Electrical Engineering: There are no prerequisite courses but it is assumed that students will have studied Mathematics (Band 5) or HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (Band E1 or above) or equivalent. Study of one science-related subject would also be an advantage, Physics is preferred. Applicants who have achieved less than Mathematics Band 5 or have not complete Physics may be admitted to the program but may need additional study and/or assistance to successfully complete the requirements of the program.
Mathematics: HSC Mathematics Extension 1(Band 4) or equivalent (or HSC Mathematics (Band 5) for the alternative program).
Mathematics (Band 5) or HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (Band E1 or above) or equivalent. Study of one science-related subject would also be an advantage, Physics is preferred.

The B Engineering component of this combined program uses the WAM as a measure for determining honours in accordance with the Embedded Honours Models Structures Policy - 000743). Refer to the relevant Bachelor of Engineering handbook.
A Bachelor (Honours) may also be available for the other combined component of this program, to meritorious students as an extra year of full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Students have the opportunity to undertake an industry-related project in their final year of study and must also complete 12 weeks of industrial experience throughout the program. This program is accredited by Engineers Australia, and many other affiliated international organisations, through the Washington Accord.
Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical)/Bachelor of Mathematics are eligible to apply for membership to Engineers Australia.
Not available to international students.
Students who have impaired function in their hands or arms, or a visual impairment may experience difficulty in pursuing this program. It is highly advisable for any prospective student to contact the Program Convenor to discuss the issue.
Students with disabilities who require reasonable adjustments to undertake their program should contact the Disability Support Service before semester commences. Some adjustments need up to 4 weeks to organise, so it is imperative that early contact is made. The Disability Support Service and Faculty staff will work together to ensure adjustments are provided in a timely manner.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) / Bachelor of Mathematics combined degree program comprises courses with a total value of 400 units. To meet the current requirements of this combined degree program, students must complete the program of study as set out. Within this program, students have the opportunity to select courses according to their individual areas of interest.
Note that it may not be possible to complete the combined degree program within five years, if selection of electives involves timetable clashes, or where elective courses are not offered in a particular year. Students enrolled in a combined degree program are advised to consult the relevant Faculty Program Convenor or Student Hub regarding their academic program.

10 units of electives are required to be undertaken with this program, in addition to the courses listed in the Course Information section.

As programs are regularly reviewed and updated, some students may experience changes to their program of study during the course of their enrolment, which may require transition arrangements.
Students affected by changes to their program are advised to review any documentation contained in the "Further Information" section (located towards the top of this Handbook page), in the first instance. Any further questions should be directed to the Program Convenor or Student Hub.
