Program handbook
Description
A Bachelor of Creative Industries degree provides students with the opportunity to shape their work in line with socio-cultural environments and cutting-edge innovations. The program offers students the choice to specialise in a chosen field of individual creative interest in the areas of Communication and Media, Creative and Performing Arts, Design, Information Technology, Music, Visual Art-Imaging Technologies, Visual Art-Studio Practices, and Writing and Publishing. These specialisations are built around a core of critical courses rich in entrepreneurial activity, business skills, digital literacies and social innovation. Students are encouraged to develop professional networks and work with a range of stakeholders and audiences. By the end of the program students will have attained sought-after skills for future employment and entrepreneurial capacity.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- A broad and coherent body of knowledge, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts in one or more disciplines as a basis for independent lifelong learning
- Cognitive skills to review critically, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge.
- Cognitive and technical skills to demonstrate a broad understanding of knowledge with depth in some areas.
- Cognitive and creative skills to exercise critical thinking and judgement in identifying and solving problems with intellectual independence.
- Communication skills to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas.
- Demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills with initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in professional practice and/or scholarship
- Demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills to adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts.
- Demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills with responsibility and accountability for own learning and professional practice in collaboration with others within broad parameters.
- Well-developed understanding and application of imaginative, critical and conceptual approaches to innovative thinking and creative production.

Program duration
3 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 8 years maximum.
International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements
This program requires the successful completion of 240 units. Students must complete one of the following pathways:
Pathway options
- 120 units of Core Courses plus Single Major option - One 80 unit Major and 40 units of Electives; OR
- 120 units of Core Courses plus a Double Minor option -Two 60 unit minors. This option utilises 40 units of Electives as part of the minors; OR
- 120 units of Core Courses plus 80 units of courses from the course list and 40 units of Electives.
Students must complete a minimum of 40 units at each level (1000 level, 2000 level, and 3000 level) with no more than 100 units at the 1000 level.
Students must only complete courses that form part of the program.
Major A major is comprised of 80 units of courses chosen from one of the major course lists. Level requirements are as follows:
- 20 units at 1000 level
- 20 units at 2000 level
- 40 units at 3000 level
Minor A minor is comprised of 60 units of courses chosen from one of the major course lists. Level requirements are as follows:
- 20 units at 1000 level
- 20 units at 2000 level
- 20 units at 3000 level
All students, please note:
- Each course may only be counted towards a single major or minor or as an elective.
- When you have successfully completed your program, your transcript will specify completed majors but will not specify completed minors.
- Full-time enrolment (80 units per year) will enable program completion in 3 yrs. Students may enrol in less per year but completion will take proportionately longer.

Transition arrangements
Effective Semester 1 2021 , there have been changes to the courses for the Bachelor of Creative Industries Majors for 2021 implementation.
Courses completed pre-2021 will count towards the program requirements.
Effective Semester 1 2020 , there have been changes to the courses for the Bachelor of Creative Industries Majors for 2020 implementation.
The requirements of the major and minors have not changed.
Major: 80 units - Choose 20 units at 1000 level, 20 units at 2000 level and 40 units at 3000 level.
Minor: 60 units - Choose 20 units at 1000 level, 20 units at 2000 level and 20 units at 3000 level.
Courses completed pre-2020 will count towards the 2020 and beyond program requirements.
For students who commenced the program prior to 2019 please refer to the 2020 Bachelor of Creative Industries Major Changes in the Additional Documents Section for more details.
Effective Semester 1, 2019 the two Visual Arts Majors (Imaging Technologies and Studio Practices) will be amalgamated into one Visual Arts Major. In addition some AART courses will have a name change and some courses will change course levels.
Students who commenced the program prior to 2019 and who were enrolled in Visual Arts Imaging Technologies or the Visual Arts Studio Practices majors/minors will be transferred to the new Visual Arts major. AART Courses completed pre-2019 will count towards the 2019 program requirements.
Students are to complete the 2019 course and program/major/minor requirements if they have not already successfully completed the equivalent course in 2018 or prior.

Electives
Electives 40 unit requirement | |

Complete 40 units of electives to fulfil the requirements of the program. Electives can be used to extend and complement your core studies with more courses in the same field of study, or from areas that might be of interest to you. Electives can be chosen from all courses available at the University that do not have any other conditions (such as a course requisite) applied to them. | 40 units |
Honours
Students who perform well during the Bachelor of Creative Industries degree with a credit average (GPA of 5.0) or greater, may undertake a further year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study to obtain an Honours degree. The Honours degree allows students to further develop their specific areas of interest.
Additional information
Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
