The Careers Service

The Careers Service offers free support to all current and past students of the University of Newcastle. From gaining part-time work while you study, clarifying your longer-term goals, or connecting with industry, we have a service or resource to fit your current needs and help you achieve your career goals.

We offer welcoming and supportive drop-in spaces at our Callaghan, Ourimbah, and Newcastle City campuses, along with online support services. Come in and speak to one of our friendly Career Peers today about how we can help!


How we can help

Meet with an Employability Consultant about:

  • Your career development and decision making
  • Identifying personal career goals and developing strategies to achieve those goals
  • Job search strategies

To make an appointment, phone us on (02) 4921 5588 or request an appointment through the Ask A Question button in CareerHub.

When requesting an appointment, you will be asked to provide the following information:

  • A short summary of what you would like to discuss at the appointment
  • The date of your preferred appointment from those listed in CareerHub
  • Your preferred appointment format. Appointments are available at the Callaghan, Newcastle City, Ourimbah, and Gosford campuses, as well as by phone or Zoom.

Students based at the Port Macquarie campus can also access the TAFE Counselling Service. To book a consultation, phone 1300 628 233 or speak to Student Central in the Library. The TAFE NSW career advice website also contains useful information.

Changing Degrees, Enrolment and Program Plans

If you have questions about your enrolment, or your program plan, then access your program planner or contact the ASKUON team. Information on the degree transfer process is also available online.

A well-written application can give you the edge in a competitive job market. We have a range of resources and services available to assist you to develop and strengthen your application.

  • Explore the resources and online tools in CareerHub and Career Essentials designed to help you with each step of your application. This includes resources on resumes, cover letters and selection criteria to help ensure you have covered every step to land your dream job or career-ready placement.
  • Upload your draft resume to the online Resume Reviewer tool and receive instant, detailed feedback as the tool scores your resume against more than 50 automated checks. After making changes you can reload your resume to see how your score has increased.
  • Receive feedback on your application by uploading your documents (resume, cover letter, selection criteria, etc) through the Ask A Question button in CareerHub. A Careers Service staff member will provide you with feedback within one business day.
  • Drop in and see our Career Peers at Callaghan, Newcastle City, or Ourimbah to get one-on-one help with your application. Or book an online Zoom appointment. Visit CareerHub for days, times, and locations.

Interviews are a great opportunity to learn more about a role and demonstrate your suitability. However, they can also be daunting if you are unprepared. Here’s how we can help you through the interview process.

  • Access a range of useful resources in CareerHub, such as videos and information sheets on interview preparation and presentation, typical interview questions, and more.
  • Practice and strengthen your interview skills and confidence through Interview360, a tool that allows you to practice your interview skills and style online.
  • Book a one-on-one interview preparation appointment to receive role-specific interview advice. Appointments are available at the Callaghan, Newcastle City, Ourimbah and Gosford campuses, as well as over Zoom or by phone. Visit CareerHub for more information.

LinkedIn is an invaluable resource in marketing yourself to, and networking with, potential employers. Here's how we can help you use this tool effectively:

  • Access resources in CareerHub and Career Essentials which can help you to craft and enhance your LinkedIn profile.
  • Book in for a review of your LinkedIn profile to receive feedback on how to improve it, or help creating it from scratch. Appointments are available at the Callaghan, Newcastle City, Ourimbah and Gosford campuses, as well as over Zoom or by phone. Visit CareerHub for more information.

University of Newcastle Alumni are welcome to access support from the Careers Service. This includes all of the services outlined above.

Alumni may also continue to use CareerHub after graduation. CareerHub includes a job search tool, online resources, access to online support from the Careers Service, and the ability to view appointment times.

If you are an Alumni and are unable to log in to CareerHub, we recommend first trying the “Reset your password” option on the login page. Note that your username will be your student number in the format c1234567. Most often, the email address attached to your account will be your @uon.edu.au email.

Our locations

Callaghan

We are located on Level 3 of the Shortland (US) building (upstairs from Subway) and are open from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Our drop-in service for job application checking is available during these hours. You can also visit us to book an appointment for career counselling, interview preparation, mock interviews, or LinkedIn profile reviews.
