Graduates attending the 2.30pm graduation ceremony on Thursday, 16 April at the Civic Theatre in Newcastle have been invited to participate in the Graduation Parade. Following are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding the parade.

Who can participate in the parade?
Invitations to join the parade have been extended to students graduating at 2.30pm on Thursday, 16 April, 2015 at the Civic Theatre in Newcastle. Guests are not able to join the parade, but can join the festivities by lining the parade route and showing their support.

What can I take with me on the parade?
We recommend you don't take anything with you as whatever you choose to take, you will need to carry the whole way. You will be better off leaving your belongings with your guests if possible. You can take a camera or phone to take photos.

Where does the parade go?
The parade will process through the streets of Newcastle CBD, starting at the Newcastle Museum, moving from the Newcastle Museum to Hunter, Auckland and King streets and into Wheeler Place. You can view a map here

What time do I need to be there?
Timings for the day are as follows:
* 11.00am to 12.15pm Register and collect academic dress and guest tickets from Newcastle City Hall 
* 12.15pm to 12.30pm Make your way to Newcastle Museum; your guests remain in Wheeler Place (next to Civic Theatre)
* 1pm to 1.30pm Graduation Parade
* 1.30pm to 1.50pm The Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and Lord Mayor address the audience in Wheeler Place
* 1.50pm Graduates and guests to be seated in the Civic Theatre
* 3.45 pm (approx.) Graduation ceremony concludes
* 3.50 pm (approx.) Graduation Reception, Level One, Newcastle City Hall

What should I wear?
Graduation is a formal occasion and you should dress appropriately (smart, business-like attire is best). Thursday is forecast to be warm, so remember to dress for the weather. You will be wearing your academic gown, hood and trencher (hired from Academic Dress Hire). You should remember to wear comfortable shoes that are appropriate for walking through the parade route.

How long does it go for?
The parade itself will go for 30 minutes. Timings for the day are as follows:

Where do my guests go?
Encourage your guests to line the route of the parade. They can then meet you in Wheeler Place at 1.30pm for the rest of the celebrations.

How do I get there?
The event is held in and around the Civic Theatre precinct in Newcastle CBD. Newcastle Buses have stops on Hunter Street outside the theatre. A Fare Free one is available for buses operating in the inner city daily from 7.30am to 6pm.

Finding a parking space in Newcastle can be a challenge. Some parkings nearby are located at:
Civic West Parking Station, located at Gibson Street
Wharf Road Car Park, located near the Crowne Plaza, on Centenary or Wharf Roads.
Wright Lane Car Park, located near Newcastle Museum.

Alternatively, you can find on-street parking in the surrounding streets.

What if it is raining?
The weather is forecast to be dry and warm. Weather can be unpredictable however, so wet weather plans will see the parade proceed unless it is unsafe to do so.

  1. Please arrive 1.5 hours before your ceremony start time.
  2. Collect your academic dress from Academic Dress Hire if you have not already done so. This is located on Level 2, Shortland Building
  3. Complete the Australian Graduate Survey.
  4. Register at the registration desk. This is located in the marquee outside the Great Hall. Here you will collect your ticket with your specified seat number and your guest tickets.
  5. Distribute guest tickets to your invited guests before you enter the Great Hall.
  6. Put on your academic dress before entering the auditorium.
  7. Be seated 30 minutes before the start of your ceremony so we can brief you on how the ceremony is run. Ushers can to show you to your allocated seat.
  1. Please arrive 1.5 hours before your ceremony start time.
  2. Register at the registration desk, mezzanine level Glasshouse. Here you will collect your academic dress, your ticket with your specified seat number and your guest tickets.
  3. Distribute guest tickets to your invited guests before you enter the Glasshouse auditorium.
  4. Put on your academic dress before entering the Glasshouse auditorium.
  5. Be seated 30 minutes before the start of your ceremony so we can brief you on how the ceremony is run.
  1. Please arrive 1.5 hours before your ceremony start time.
  2. Collect your academic dress from Academic Dress Hire if you have not already done so. This is located at the UoN Services office, (Room 2.27) Level 2, Ourimbah Library. Access is from the top of the stairs (to the right of the library entrance).
  3. Register at the registration desk. This is located in the marquee outside Lecture Theatres 1 and 2. Here you will collect your ticket with your specified seat number and your guest tickets.
  4. Distribute guest tickets to your invited guests before you enter the Fine Art/Drama Studio.
  5. Put on your academic dress before entering the Fine Art/Drama Studio.
  6. Be seated 30 minutes before the start of your ceremony so we can brief you on how the ceremony is run. Ushers can to show you to your allocated seat.

 What to do when you arrive - Singapore

  1. Please arrive 1.5 hours before your ceremony start time.
  2. Register your attendance.
  3. Distribute guest tickets to your invited guests before you enter the Hall.
  4. Put on your academic dress before entering the auditorium.
  5. Be seated 30 minutes before the start of your ceremony.

Your guests can take photos and videos during the ceremony but they need to remain in their seats. You will also have access to a digital photo of you receiving your testamur via the photographer's facebook page.

As part of your graduation package you and your guests are invited to attend the Graduate Reception.

At Port Macquarie, this is held on the mezzanine level of the Glasshouse.

Finger food, tea and coffee will be provided and Individual or group portrait photography is available.  Cohort photos will also be taken here.

At Callaghan, it is held in the Brennan and McLarty Rooms in the Shortland Building.

At the Central Coast Campus it is held in the Cafeteria.

There will be live music and finger food provided, and runs for around 1.5 hours.
Also available at the reception are:

  • Individual or group portrait photography.
  • Testamur framing and plaques.
  • University of Newcastle memorabilia.
