Due to the large scale of the new Student Accommodation project, there will be construction impacts during 2013-14.

Student accommodation project construction impacts

The construction

Our $100 million Student Accommodation Project will take approximately two years to build. Located next to Evatt House, the construction hours are Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 5pm. Construction impacts will be felt by students and staff throughout 2013 and 2014. We have tried to limit construction impacts where we can.

Impact on parking

  • parking area behind Evatt House no longer available
  • car park at front of Evatt House largely unaffected
  • additional 52 residential parking spaces available in car park 11
  • car park 6 can be used for residential parking between 5.30pm and 8am
  • 30 space staff car park near tennis courts no longer available
  • additional parking spaces in car park 10
  • access from car park 15 via path along tennis courts no longer available, alternative is path along the Ring Road

Impact on buildings and services

  • Newcastle campus tennis courts no longer available, alternative arrangements made for the University Tennis Club and School of Education teaching activities
  • two disused cottages demolished
  • construction zone crosses the cricket practice oval area, however it will not impact playing area or practice nets
  • 150 space builders and sub-contractors parking area created on previously unused land near Warabrook Station

Other construction impacts

  • short-term road closures required for heavy equipment or cranes, staff and student notification will be via email
  • longer-term road closures for installation of utilities scheduled for holiday periods
  • dust is inevitable from the construction site, controls include water-spray carts and dust monitors

Environmental management

  • design promotes bushland character
  • design takes into account location of significant trees and watercourse corridor
  • some trees will be removed, but significant trees maintained and replacement trees planted
  • environmental officer and independent arborist appointed to advise on tree significance and protection
