Description
The Musculoskeletal Trauma Course will discuss both low-energy and high-energy injuries of the extremities. This course will cover all diaphyseal, metaphyseal and articular fracture management of both the upper and lower limb.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Recognise limb threatening injuries
2. Describe typical injury mechanisms of upper and lower limb fractures
3. Discuss optimal timing, complications and priorities
Content
The Course will be organised for one semester in 13 weeks with 1-2 topics per week and subsequent quizzes as follows:
Introduction to musculoskeletal trauma
Week 1
- Significance (on physiology and on resources), magnitude of the problem
- Anatomy/histology/biomechanics and regeneration of bone, cartilage, muscle and tendon
Week 2
- Rationale of musculoskeletal diagnostics
- Open fracture management
Week 3
- Compartment syndrome
- Mangled extremity amputation versus salvage
Week 4
- Damage control orthopaedics vs early total care
- Models of care for orthopaedic trauma
Lower limb injuries
Week 5
- General principles of lower limb trauma, overview of classification and management
- Injuries around the hip and femur
Week 6
- Injuries around the knee
- Tibia, foot and ankle injuries
Week 7
- Other infection related complications (UTI, acalculosus cholecystitis, sinusitis etc)

Upper limb injuries
Week 8
- General principles of upper limb trauma, overview of classification and management
- Brachial plexus injury and scapulothoracic dislocation
Week 9
- Injuries around the shoulder and humerus
- Injuries around the elbow and forearm
Week 10
- Wrist and hand fractures
- Soft tissue injuries of the hand, principles of microsurgery
Special aspects of orthopaedic trauma
Week 11
- Paediatric fractures
- Geriatric/osteoporotic fractures
Week 12
- Non-unions (orthobiologics)
- Outcome measures in orthopaedic trauma

Week 13
- Final Assignment
Requisite
Students can only enrol in this course if they are active in the Master of Traumatology [12392] program.
