Festivals and events assume special places in societies and cultures because they unite people in ways that range from creative celebration to political debate. Within the contemporary tourism industry, festivals and events (including conferences and conventions) exist due to historical, social, political, cultural and environmental significance. This course will facilitate your understanding of the contextual environment within which special events and festivals are located; their relationships with the broader tourism industry both at a national and international scale; and their associated economic, social and cultural impacts. Through the analysis and critique of selected events and festivals, you will gain valuable skills relating to their planning, management and evaluation. Designed to ensure the specialised skills and knowledge required of a tourism professional, you will experience the preparation of an event feasibility document, the development of an event program, the development of budgets and marketing strategies, and ways to identify and develop strategies for resolving potential management issues.

ObjectivesOn successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an integrative understanding of the historical, social, political, cultural, and environmental contexts of
festivals and events.
2. Identify and apply the design, planning, marketing, leadership and evaluation principles associated with events and
festivals management.
3. Critique and analyse the effectiveness of selected national and international festival and event cases.
4. Effectively communicate ideas, knowledge and outcomes in both written and oral formats reactive to specific Festivals &
Event Planning contexts.
5. Work independently and as a team member to collect and analyse information to guide your problem solving and decision
6. Demonstrate the initial strategies required to plan, lead and manage an event project.

1. Definitions and classifications systems.
2. Community and destination identity through public celebration.
3. Social and cultural impacts of events and festivals.
4. Design and planning approaches and models.
5. Marketing and promotion strategies.
6. Project Management.
7. Evaluation and Monitoring strategies.
