Description

The very foundation for developing quality visitor services including tourism information, tour guiding services and tour development strategies is their prospective alignment to tourist and leisure traveller motivation, behaviour, and satisfaction. Theoretical material sourced from studies of tourism psychology, consumer behaviour in tourism, recreational planning, tourism management, and tourism policy and planning inform the topic areas covered in this course. The key operational issues associated with the global concern of risk assessment and management are explored together with the growth in demand for alternative risk recreation and tourism experiences such as Volunteer and Adventure Tourism.

Particular emphasis is applied to developing an understanding of group dynamics and leadership skills relevant to managing individual visitors and tour groups. Designed to enhance graduate attributes, you will develop skills in engaging theory with field work through experiential exercises and communication formats and contexts reflective of current and future professional tourism practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Articulate major theoretical understandings of tourist behaviour, including key social psychological theories associated with motivation and identity development;

2. Analyse and apply group planning, leadership and management strategies that lead to visitor quality experiences;

3. Identify key principles of risk assessment and management as it applies to national and international tourism products and services;

4. Exhibit an integrative understanding of the legal and ethical issues associated with guiding and leadership;

5. Assess and critique leadership and visitor management techniques through participation in field trips;

6. Identify and locate global tourism information sources, apply inquiry processes to evaluate these sources and select the appropriate professional communication context.

The course includes but is not restricted to the following topics:

  1. Tourist and tour group behaviour and motivations
  2. Tour guiding history, principles and trends
  3. Quality tourism experiences and satisfaction
  4. Managing visitor behaviours through leadership, operation and program design
  5. Managing visitor behaviours through facility and space design and planning
  6. Ethical issues in visitor management
  7. Leadership, guiding and risk management principles
