EcoTourism and Resource Management

Ecotourism, an important form of resource use, will be comprehensively introduced with recent developments and possible futures examined. How resources are developed and managed to provide a quality environment for sustained and satisfying experiences of ecotourism in diverse natural settings is the primary focus of the course. The course will also examine international trends and issues related to ecotourism and other forms of nature-based tourism, models of tourism and recreation planning, and ecotourism accreditation systems.

Objectives On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify and examine the relationships between leisure, recreation, tourism/ecotourism and resource management;
2. Review contemporary ecotourism and resource management concepts and issues;
3. Demonstrate an integrative understanding of ecotourism principles as they relate to resource management issues;
4. Critically examine current approaches to ecotourism management in diverse settings;
5. Identify the potential influences of economic, social, political and technological developments upon ecotourism development;
6. Evaluate ecotourism sites sensitive to the diversity of societal needs and opinions; and
7. Communicate inquiry outcomes incorporating a selection of oral, written and visual formats reflective of professional contexts.
Content The topics in this course include but are not limited to the following:
1. Relationships between leisure, outdoor recreation, tourism/ecotourism, and resource management;
2. Ecotourism related motivation, constraint, and behaviour;
3. Ecotourism services and management in urban, rural, and protected areas;
4. Current development in resource planning and management applying to ecotourism;
5. Case studies that demonstrate the social, political and technological forces underpinning recent developments in, and possible futures for ecotourism in developed and developing nations;
6. Trends and issues in the expansion of ecotourism services internationally.
Replacing Course(s) This course replaces LEIS2310.
Transition This course is not available to students who have successfully completed LEIS2310.
