Upon completion of this course students will be expected to:
1. Demonstrate an in depth knowledge of the major themes and key principles of Catholic Social teaching.
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the social mission of the Church.
3. Evaluate the significance and the impact of Papal Encyclicals and Bishops' statements on Catholic Social teaching.
4. Evaluate the importance and theological significance of Catholic Social teaching in addressing contemporary social issues.

Themes include:
1. An in depth investigation of Papal Encyclicals and Bishops' statements concerning poverty and justice in the modern world.
2. What does it mean to have a preferential option for the poor?
3. How is a social conscience different from a moral conscience and how do I form a social justice conscience.
4. An in depth study of a social justice issue confronting Australia in the 21st century, for example: Refugees; Aboriginals; Unemployment.
