Advanced Studies in Liturgical Spirituality: The Paschal Mystery

The course develops an historical overview of the spirituality of liturgy, highlighting the importance of its Trinitarian base with an emphasis on the paschal mystery. The pastoral emphasis of this course seeks to link liturgy with contemporary living.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course students will be expected to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of foundational aspects of Christian life and theology;
2. Analyse key approaches to the study a liturgical spirituality as part of the continuing development of Christian thought and praxis;
3. Demonstrate a deeper understanding of, and appreciation for theology as the expression of a changing Christian identity under the pressure of different social contexts, by thorough use of selected rituals of worship.
4. Examine and discuss the significant role of the Trinity in worship and the practical implications of the Paschal Mystery for Christian living;
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the Christian life and contemporary culture through the integration of liturgy and advanced Studies in life.
Content
Themes will include:
- The development of an understanding of liturgical spirituality;
- The place of the Trinity in prayer and worship;
- The paschal mystery - the heart of a liturgical spirituality;
- Prayer and ritual in the Christian life;
- 'lex orandi lex credendi';
- Prayer of the Church and the Liturgical Year serving the needs of contemporary Christians;
- Developing a link between contemporary culture and liturgy.
