This course reflects in depth on the evolving nature of mission over the centuries, recognising its profound response to and influence by the changing needs of the world. The influence of the signs of the times and the contemporary context of mission for the role of the church. The course examines the theological foundations of proclamation, liberation, and dialogue as other modern entry points for mission.

Objectives Upon completion of this course students will be expected to:
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of context for mission today and across time;
- Identify critical missional paradigms and their changing nature throughout Christian history;
- Identify major missional themes and images in both Old and New Testaments;
- Examine and articulate the Church's official teaching on mission;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Trinitarian basis of contemporary mission theology, with the inherent links between Trinity, God's mission, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the role of the Church;
- Explain and discuss the major domains of evangelization today.
Content Themes will include:
- Context as a shaper of mission strategy;
- Mission history in terms of changing images and paradigms;
- The strengths and weaknesses of various contemporary images;
- Major "faces" of mission in the Old Testament and the differing approaches to mission in Matthew and Luke-Acts;
- Jesus' teaching on the Kingdom of God;
- The missional nature of liturgy, prayer and contemplation;
- Differing approaches to mission in Matthew and Luke-Acts;
- Evolution of Catholic teaching on mission from the Second Vatican Council to the present;
- The place of liturgy, prayer and contemplation within a Church which is, by its nature, missional;
- The major domains of evangelisation today - proclamation (by word and witness);
- Dialogue;
- Justice peace and the integrity of creation; inculturation;
- Pastoral care of the faithful.
