Community-in-Mission: A Contemporary Theology of the Church

This course unit will describe the various contemporary theological models of the Church which is semper reformanda. It will discuss their theological foundations and examine the practical consequences for the mission of the Church.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course students will be expected to:
1. Explain the history and context of recent theologies of the Church;
2. Examine the legacy of the contemporary approaches with regard to the teaching of the II Vatican Council;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges for the Life of the Church.
Content
Themes will include: Teaching of Jesus Christ in the Bible; philosophical sources and social-cultural realities in which the recent ecclesial approaches originate; Vatican II; Social teaching of the Church; Church and Politics; Church and Liberation; Church and the option for the oppressed; Joseph Ratzingers reaction; Local Church and Universal Church.
