This course has a focus on the background and literature of the New Testament. The course looks at the Four Gospels and Pauline Literature and would be helpful, though not essential, for students who wish to study particular Books of the New Testament.
| Objectives | Upon completion of this course students will be expected to: 1. Demonstrate critical knowledge of the historical, cultural and religious background of the New Testament. 2. Provide a narrative outline of the four Gospels and identify the situation and concerns of the communities whose lives they reflect. 3. Critically assess Paul's contribution to the early Church and the context of his letters with special attention to 1 Corinthians. 4. Apply a critical exegetical method to selected passages from the Synoptic Gospels or the Letters of St Paul. 5. Appreciate the New Testament as a literary expression of the Resurrection faith of the early Christian community. |

| Content | Themes will include: 1. Judaism in the Greco-Roman world. 2. Jewish religious beliefs, groups, institutions and feasts. 3. How the Gospels came to be written/formed. 4. The narrative structure of the four Gospels. 5. Paul's conversion from Acts and his own account(s). 6. Overview of Pauline literature especially 1 Corinthians. 7. Exegesis of a selected New Testament passage. |
