This course has a focus on the background and literature of the Old Testament. The history, religion and culture of Israel and her neighbours from the period 'before Abraham' to 4 BCE. Special reference to the Pentateuch and the Prophets will be made.
| Objectives | Upon completion of this course students will be expected to: 1. Demonstrate a critical knowledge of key features of the historical, cultural and religious background of the Old Testament. 2. Explain the importance of the Exodus as the watermark of Jewish faith and the birth of a nation. 3. Describe the circumstances of the Exile, the role of the prophets and the contribution of the Exile to the development of the Biblical text. 4. Exegete selected Old Testament texts. 5. Demonstrate an appreciation of the Old Testament as a literary account of God's action in Israel's history. |
