This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the origins and development of the Roman liturgy leading to the significant reforms of Second Vatican Council. It introduces students to the meaning and theology of liturgy. Key documents underpinning the reform and celebration of the liturgy will be considered. Contemporary questions related to liturgy and worship will be explored.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course students will be expected to:
1. Examine the origin and development of the Roman liturgy leading to the liturgical reform of Vatican II, its reception and consequent challenges;
2. Study ritual, symbol and celebration as key to good liturgical experience;
3. Discuss the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy in light of recent documents of John Paul II and Benedict XVI;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of, and appreciation for, liturgical law;
4. Evaluate contemporary liturgical questions and issues.
