Theology Honours I

Students are introduced to key debates and perspectives on theory and methods in, and/or the content of, theological disciplines. Topics such as the philosophical underpinnings of theological work, the links between theory and method, ethical issues, justification of methodology and specific methods are explored. The course enhances skills and capacities in reading and literature reviewing, critical reasoning and argument, essay writing and verbal communication.

Objectives
Upon successful completion of this honours course in Theology, students will be able to demonstrate:
1. A detailed knowledge of some of the major texts and thinkers in their field of inquiry;
2. An understanding of major issues and concepts related to their field of writing;
3. An appreciation of the diversity of theoretical, methodological or technical approaches in their field;
4. A contextualised understanding of advanced approaches to theological studies;
5. An appreciation of the complex philosophies and ideologies which inform current practice in the disciplines of theology;
6. The scholarly skills and self-confidence necessary to conceptualise, research and compose a substantive piece of theological research;
7. The ability to produce an extended research essay or creative work at Honours level;
8. Written and oral communications skills appropriate for a professional scholarly environment.
Content
- The course will involve students in the analysis and critical evaluation of theoretical, methodological or technical issues in their field of study.
- Seminars will usually examine key texts of importance to a field of writing or theoretical/technical debate. In consultation with the coordinator and/or supervisor, students will develop a topic of special interest as the basis for a long essay.

Entry to the Bachelor of Theology (Honours) will customarily require completion of a Bachelor of Theology or equivalent, and a minimum credit average in the undergraduate program.
