Examines the growth of interreligious relations as a positive response to the challenges of religious plurality in our globalised world and an antidote to religious extremism. Traces the stages in the emergence of this development, the scriptural and theological resources the Church brings to this engagement, how building relations across the religious and cultural divisions in society is an integral part of the evangelizing mission of the Church, and the skills and dispositions required.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the theological rationale and motivation for interreligious relations as a constitutive dimension of the evangelizing mission of the Church.
2. Discuss the scriptural and theological resources that empower them to reach out to the religious other with integrity to their own tradition and openness to learn from their dialogue partner.
3. Discuss the contemporary models and civic and ecclesial institutions that facilitate interreligious and intercultural exchanges.
4. Demonstrate an ability to assess their interreligious relations within their own cultural context and to develop strategies to counter the negatives and develop the positives.
Content Themes will include:

The new questions that faced the Church in the 20th Century; the novelty of this new moment in history; the emergence of interreligious dialogue as a constitutive dimension of the evangelizing mission of the Church; the documents that show the stages in this development; the biblical and theological basis for interreligious relations; the different types of dialogue; the complex relationship between dialogue and proclamation; opportunities and obstacles for interreligious dialogue; skills and dispositions required for interreligious relations; theological issues arising from dialogue; dialogue as an antidote for religious extremism; the individual and collective impact of different religions within the cultural matrix; collaboration between religions for promoting peace, justice and harmony in society.
