This course examines the history of the Catholic Church in Australia from its foundations in the convict colony through to the late 20th century. The role of Catholics within Australia and their relations with other Churches are included in this survey.
ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, students will be expected to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the overview of the foundation and development of the Catholic Church in Australia; 2 Demonstrate an ability to trace the changes in the sense of identity of Catholics over two centuries; 3. Demonstrate an ability to discover a range of primary resources for their studies, both national and local; 4. Be able to empathise with Australians in earlier periods of history. | ||
ContentThe course will begin with an overview history of the period and then look at some important themes and developments. These include: difficulties in a convict colony; transition of leadership from English Benedictines to Irish bishops and finally to Australian-born leaders; the roles played by religious orders; the development of the Catholic school system; sectarian problems; Catholics and Australian politics, especially in relation to the ALP Split; changing spirituality; reactions to the Second Vatican Council. | ||
