This course will allow students to select one of two areas of Biblical study: The Psalms or Lukan-Acts; and will examine the literary form and theological content of The Psalms or Lukan-Acts.
ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, students will be expected to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the principal issues associated with the study. 2. Exhibit a critical understanding of the principal literary forms in their selected topic 3. Demonstrate a well-developed skill in the exegesis of a selected passage(s) form their selected topic. 4. Display a critical appreciation of the place of their selected study in the Hebrew or Christian Canons. | ||
ContentThemes will include: The Psalms: 1. Did David write the 150 psalms? 2. The Psalms as the prayer of the people 3. Hymns of praise - wholistic approach to religion, the cosmos, the individual. 4. Psalms of lament - individual and communal lament. 5. Liturgical and historical Psalms; Psalms and liturgy; Wisdom Psalms and Royal psalms. Lukan-Acts: 1. Luke's Gospel - The Gospel of the Poor. 2. The Acts: The Gospel of the early Church. 3. Historical, social and political background of the Lukan community. 4. Luke's historical perspective; distinctive literary features of the Gospel and Acts. 5. Principal theological themes of the Gospel and Acts. 6. Recent scholarship and trends. 7. Critical exegesis of selected passages. | ||
