Mission: The Role of the Church

This course offers an introduction to the role of mission in the life of the church, demonstrating its evolving nature throughout the centuries. Aware of John XXIII's call to read the signs of the times the course explores the role of mission in a changing world - its theological foundations of proclamation, liberation and dialogue as significant entry points for mission today.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:

1. Articulate their understanding of the context for mission as it has developed over time;
2. Discuss important missional paradigms and their changing nature throughout Christian history;
3. Demonstrate knowledge of major missional themes and images in both Old and New Testaments;
4. Articulate an understanding of the Churchs official teaching on mission;
5. Demonstrate knowledge of the Trinitarian basis of contemporary mission theology, and the links between Trinity, Gods mission, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the role of the Church;
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the major domains of evangelization today.
Content Themes will include: how context shapes of mission strategy; history of mission facing changing images and paradigms; the strengths and weaknesses of various contemporary images; major faces of mission in the Old Testament; Jesus teaching on the Kingdom of God; the approaches to mission in Matthew and Luke-Acts; mission in Catholic teaching from the Second Vatican Council to the present; the missional nature of liturgy, prayer and contemplation within a Church; the major domains and challenges for evangelization today.
