Working with Grief and Loss

This course encourages those working in the field of human services to explore current social understanding and theoretical concepts informing contemporary responses to grief and loss. Focusing on the theories underpinning social constructionism, meaning and strengths participants will critically reflect on social interventions ranging from counselling through to community capacity building. The learning processes will require course participants to apply theory and intervention to authentic work and life experience.

Objectives
a. Students will develop the capacity to reflect critically on current perspectives on grief and loss and the consequent impact on society.
b. Students will gain an understanding of the theory relating to a range of contemporary practices in relation to grief and loss.
c. Students will apply theory and current social understandings to authentic work and life experience through exploring an area of choice in depth.
Content
The course covers the following areas:
1. Developments in loss and grief over time.
2. Current theoretical approaches to loss and grief.
3. Current trends in social interventions in loss and grief.
4. Processes for applying current knowledge to working in a human service context.
