This course enables students interested in furthering their skills in working with children and families to develop a strong and critical understanding of current knowledge and social intervention in the area of violence. The course examines current social theory in relation to violence in society and best practice knowledge on effective social intervention in the area of violence in the context of children and families. The course draws upon and critiques relevant theories and concepts in the social sciences that underpin violence and then focuses on the application of current knowledge on theory and intervention in the context of children and families.
| Objectives | 1. Enhance knowledge and skills necessary for working with violence in the context of children and families 2. Explore new developments in relevant social and psychological theory as it applies to violence in the context of children and families 3. Enhance capacity to critically appraise theory and practice. 4. Enhance capacity to integrate theory, research and practice. 5. Strengthen practice skills in working with violence in the context of children and families 6. Further develop skills and knowledge in order to contribute to the building of a sound knowledge base for practice in the care and protection of children 7.
