Community Practice examines the theory and practice of community development, with a particular focus on the practice skills required for practice at a community level.

Objectives The objectives of this course are to:
1. Explore current trends in community practice.
2. Locate current trends in their historical, political, social and economic contexts.
3. Gain knowledge of community practice theory and models.
4. Develop skills in community practice.
Content 1. Current trends in community policy and practice.
2. Critical analysis of past and current contexts of community development perspectives and practice.
3. Current approaches to community development - community capacity building, strengths based practice, social entrepreneurship, partnership and collaborations, human rights and community development.
4. Skills in community practice - working with community groups, advocacy and negotiation, conflict resolution.
Replacing Course(s) The course is an offering in new specialisation within the Graduate Certificate and Masters Programs in Social Science. There are no existing equivalent courses available through the University of Newcastle.

Students will be expected to provide written evidence to the satisfaction of the Head of School as their skills in communication equivalent to those learnt in SWRK6130A & B through previous study or work experience.
