SURV3510

Geodesy 1

10 Units 3000 Level Course

Available in 2013

Callaghan Campus Semester 2

Previously offered in 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004

The course involves:
1. the fundamentals and modern concerns of geodesy, recent developments and applications of global and satellite geodesy,
2. the gravity field of the earth and how it affects observations,
3. the geometry of the ellipsoid,
4. determination of geographical and map projection coordinates from geodetic observations, and
5. the concept of a geodetic datum and how to transform coordinates from one datum to another.

Objectives 1. To obtain an elementary understanding of the way that the earth's gravity field affects observations.
2. To gain a basic knowledge of the geometry of the ellipsoid and of map projections.
3. To be able to perform computations on the ellipsoid
4. To be able to do computations on the Universal Transverse Mercator projection.
5. To understand what a geodetic datum is, how it is obtained and how to do datum transformations.
6. To understand the significance of the Geocentric Datum of Australia and Map Grid of Australia.
