This course provides an in depth study of a topic in Statistics at an advanced level. The topic is individually chosen to suit the student's background and aspirations, and will be offered either as a lecture course or as a reading course under the direction of a member of the academic staff.
Each student's topic must be approved by the Honours program convenor.
| Objectives | The course contributes to the program's graduate profiles: GAP1: Strong conceptual, theoretical and analytical skills in mathematics and /or statistics. GAP2: Using mathematical ideas, techniques and technologies to formulate and solve problems from both within and outside mathematics and statistics. On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of the content and context of an advanced statistical topic; 2. apply advanced statistical problem solving skills 3. use sophisticated statistical communication skills in the presentation of statistical arguments. |

| Content | In this course students will be required to complete a single topic of study drawn from an area of statistics such as categorical data analysis, Bayesian analysis, multivariate statistics, time series analysis, bioinformatics, biostatistics, statistical process control & surveys and experimental design, environmental and ecological statistics and climate change research methods. The topics on offer in any given year will be determined by staff availability and student interest. A topic will only be offered once in any calendar year. | ||||
| Replacing Course(s) | New 10 unit courses are replacing previous 20 unit courses. The decision to offer five 10 unit directed studies courses, rather than say two 20 unit and one 10 unit course, is to allow . students greater flexibility in how they distribute their load across their period of candidature, particularly those undertaking part time study . students to gain more frequent feedback on their progress through the program by the award of an official result at the conclusion of each topic studied |
