SPTH3002

Swallowing Across the Lifespan

10 Units 3000 Level Course

Available in 2012

Callaghan CampusSemester 1

Previously offered in 2013

Focuses on normal and abnormal swallowing. This course involves assessment and management of feeding/swallowing disorders in infants and children, and adults. Key issues related to assessment and intervention practices are addressed. Clinical assessment and specific intervention techniques are studied in relation to specific dysphagic populations.

Objectives
Students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate awareness of normal swallowing across the lifespan and etiological factors involved in impairments of swallowing
2. Select appropriate swallowing assessments for children and adults.
3. Analyse and interpret assessment findings with regard to knowledge of normal swallowing.
4. Identify further information and referral requirements.
5. Develop comprehensive and detailed plans for swallowing intervention in children and adults
6. Report on findings and make recommendations for future management.

Transition
SPTH3120 will not be offered after 2011. Students enrolled in the program at the present time (i.e. 2009) will be advised of this change, in order to identify any students whose planned sequence of enrolment might need adjustment. Students who do not successfully complete SPTH3120 in 2011 will be able to undertake SPTH3002 instead. For students who do not successfully complete SPTH3120 due to non-completion in the dysphagia (swallowing) components, no transitional problems are envisaged, as the content coverage is sufficiently similar. Transitional arrangements are more complex for students who do not successfully complete SPTH3120 due to non-completion in the hearing topic component, as this material is now covered in an earlier course (SPTH2001 Advanced Child Language & Hearing). It is proposed to require these students to enrol in the new course SPTH3002, and grant internal credit for the ungraded requirement of the clinical visit, and for the viva (30%), but require completion of the quiz (30%), and completion of an alternative topic on hearing for the assignment (40%) (i.e. rather than on the dysphagia topic).
