The course follows on from the coverage in SPTH2003 Complex Communication Needs 1 of multi-modal communication and AAC. Assessment and intervention methods for adult and child who use AAC will be considered, for example, AAC applications and acquired disabilities. The course will also cover the assessment and management of various genetic conditions including, cleft palate and other craniofacial anomalies.
| Objectives | Upon successful completion of this course, a student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate awareness of aetiological factors involved in persons with AAC/complex communication needs such as those with craniofacial anomaly especially cleft lip & palate, acquired neurological conditions such as stroke, dysarthria, apraxia of speech and other complex conditions such as cerebral palsy, Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) developmental disability, hospitalized populations, those with life-limiting illnesss/death & dying. 2. Administer, analyse and interpret findings from comprehensive assessment of craniofacial anomaly and complex communication needs. 3. Identify further information and referral requirements for craniofacial anomaly and AAC users. 4. Develop comprehensive and detailed plans for intervention for those with craniofacial anomaly and AAC users 5. Report on findings and make recommendations for future management for a person with craniofacial anomaly and an AAC user. |

| Transition | SPTH2220 will not be offered after 2010. Students enrolled in the program at the present time (i.e. 2009) will be advised of this change, in order to identify any students whose planned sequence of enrolment might need adjustment. For students who do not successfully complete SPTH2220 due to non-completion in the stuttering components will be able to enrol in SPTH2001 in 2011 (as course content will be sufficiently similar). Students who do not successfully complete SPTH2220 due to non-completion in the advanced speech including cleft palate/craniofacial component will be able to enrol in SPTH3003 in 2012 (as this course content will be sufficiently similar). | ||||||||||
