Provides students with a sound grounding in the range of research methods relevant to the wider teaching program in Social Change and Development. It also provides an awareness of some of the relevant debates in the area of methodology. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods will be covered. The course will be student-centred, problem-oriented and delivered in a multi-media format.

Objectives 1.Develop a critical understanding of the linkage between theories of social change and development and social research;
2.Develop a critical understanding of the range of research techniques employed by social researchers, both qualitative and quantitative, in constructing and testing theoretical understandings of social relationships;
3.Critique the research methods and the interpretation of data found in readings for other courses;
4.Design research frameworks appropriate to the research tasks arising from other parts of the course;
5.Utilise a spreadsheet package to analyse numerical data and present it in the forms of graphs and tables appropriate to the needs of social science research;
6.Critically understand the ethical implications of research practices and the external environment within which social research is conducted.
Content Content includes
* examination of the range of research methods relevant to the wider teaching program in Social Change and Development;
* exposure to some of the relevant debates in the area of methodology;
* examinaiton of both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
