Environmental Issues and their Social Context

Examines current environmental problems and commonly proposed political reforms; industrial, domestic and rural environmental technologies, asking what impact the widespread introduction of these technologies might have on society; debates about indigenous environmental knowledge and the social roots of environmental problems in developing countries; proposals for radical structural reform of society to deal with environmental problems; discusses tendencies within the environmental movement such as eco-feminism; deep ecology; social ecology; anarchist and socialist perspectives and environmentalism as a social movement. Field trips will be used to develop understanding of the social context of environmental issues.

Objectives Students will:
1.Develop an understanding of a sociological approach to environmental issues.
2.Learn to deal critically with environmental controversies within social science, within the environment movement and within society at large.
3.Gain improved sociological analytical skills through this focused study of environmental issues.
4. Develop improved general scholarly skills in writing an academic essay, in reading critically and in doing research.
Content This course examines:
1. current environmental problems and commonly proposed solutions in political reform;
2. the impact of industrial, domestic and rural environmental technologies upon society;
3. debates about indigenous environmental knowledge;
4. the social roots of environmental problems in developing countries;
5. proposals for radical social change to deal with environmental problems, such as eco-feminism, deep ecology, social ecology, anarchist and socialist perspectives and environmentalism as a social movement.
