Upon the completion of this course, students will be expected to demonstrate:
1) to introduce students to the range and depth of research and scholarship in social anthropology and sociology in Aboriginal studies
2) to look at the research strategies that have been developed
3) to understand the modern forms of power that have emerged and are deployed to manage marginalised Indigenous populations
4) to apply the understandings of the course to contemporary issues.

The course considers
* the historical and social issues associated with aspects of social life for Aboriginal Australians from a comparative perspective with other Indigenous peoples in modern liberal states
* the relations of Indigenous peoples with state systems in contexts of colonial conquest and racial stigmatisation and subordination.
* the relations between Indigenous groups and liberal states will be cover political and economic inequality in modern nation states.
* the unique status of Indigenous peoples requires our understanding of the issues to be extended beyond the question of equal rights to the question of cultural rights as it applies to Aboriginal people.
* Indigenous representations of their experience as expressed in their contributions to art, politics and literature.
