Focuses upon the social and cultural life of Aboriginal and other Indigenous peoples in modern liberal states through the use of comparative studies. It examines the consequences of dispossession, their cultural/racial stigmatisation and their subordination. It also focuses on how Indigenous peoples have been engaged in the political, social and economic arenas in order to mitigate their circumstances and regain aspects of their communal autonomy. The course exposes students to the complex terrain that contemporary ethnographic research engages. The deprived and underprivileged status of Aboriginal peoples is dealt with in terms of the broader questions of political and economic inequality in modern nation states.
