Introduces students to a critical analysis and evaluation of policies and politics pertaining to Indigenous Australians. Government policies such as segregation, assimilation, self-management and self-determination and their effects on Aboriginal communities are evaluated. Introduces students to key theories, concepts and research on the role of the state in contemporary society. One of the central aims is to give priority to the Aboriginal viewpoint on social justice and self-determination issues.
ObjectivesUpon the completion of this course, students will be expected to demonstrate: 1. general understanding of the global and national context in which Australian governments on a state and federal level have developed policies for the governance of Australia's Indigenous peoples; 2. an understanding of the philosophies and viewpoints underpinning the development of the major forms of policy formulations; 3. an appreciation of the ways in which historic and geographic factors produced regional differences in outcomes of the relationship between Indigenous people with the state; 4. an awareness of the ways in which these policies impact on Indigenous communities and the views held by Indigenous people on government policy and their relationship with other Australians; 5. an awareness of the role Indigenous people and their leaders have taken in exposing racialised injustices and fighting for social justice for their communities; 6. analytic skills and written communication skills appropriate to second-year undergraduate level. | ||||
