This course examines the interrelationships between social theory and social science research. It presents the wide range of research strategies, methods and processes in social science research. Human research ethics and the politics of research are also explored. Students will develop and critically evaluate a social science research proposal.

Objectives On successful completion of this course students should be able to demonstrate:
1. an understanding of the key concepts and methods used in social science research,
2. an ability to critically evaluate social science research,
3. an ability to design and evaluate a research project,
4. extended oral and written presentation skills.
Content The course will be introduced through an exploration of social science research within intellectual, social and political contexts. The range of social science research methods will be explored, locating these within ethical, methodological and theoretical frameworks. Students will present and critically evaluate their developed research proposals.
