Economic Sociology - A Case Study Approach

10 Units 3000 Level Course

Available in 2012

Callaghan CampusSemester 2

Previously offered in 2011

This course will introduce students to the key ideas framing the recent global economic crisis and develop understanding of cutting edge debates in this field, including those concerning the rise of immaterial forms of labour and value, the performativity of economics and the emergence of novel forms of economic exchange.

Objectives
The course will observe that by far the majority of empirical investigations within contemporary economic sociology proceed via the adoption a case study method. This course will ask what does the case study do for economic sociology? Why has this methodological strategy come to dominate this field? Students will be asked to consider these questions as well as demonstrate their theoretical grasp of the field via the completion of an assessed small-scale case study of an aspect of economic life in the Newcastle area.
