Spiritualities, Practices and Values for Professional Leadership

This course is designed for those interested in the nature and practice of various spiritualities, spiritual practices, and values, all in the context of professional and wisdom-based leadership - whether as teachers, nurses, lawyers, engineers, or other professions. In the area of spirituality for example, it examines in a connected and practical way, topics such as - the nature of spirituality, the two halves of the spiritual life and the search for wisdom, ancient journey paradigms, insights from key spiritual teachers and leaders, and a variety of spiritualities throughout history, mainly Christian, Jewish and Islamic, that are relevant to the human journey.
Similarly, in the area of spiritual disciplines, it invites participants to explore applied theory in relation to practices such as - meditation and mindfulness, 'lectio divina' (sacred reading), Christian, Jewish and Islamic spiritual practices, icon spirituality, walking meditation, and others. Finally, in the domain of values, the course explores the theory and application of key stances or values from the same three traditions, such as - paying attention, hospitality, forgiveness, Sabbath leisure, prophetic imagination, humility, mercy, contemplation, justice, and the common good. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on the need to contextualise spirituality within the ancient stories of the mythic life journey, within the two halves of life, and within the context of the search for happiness, wisdom, flourishing and fulfilment, all of which, in turn, provide support for professional leadership.

|Objectives||Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:|
1. Reflect on, and engage with, the traditional and contemporary understandings of Christian, Jewish and Islamic spiritualities, as they relate to leadership and wisdom.
2. Understand approaches, practices and values that enable spiritual growth, contemplation, wisdom and happiness, with a view to enlarging leadership capacity.
3. Approach spirituality in a varied and systematic way, with an awareness of the key issues, practices and methodologies for contemporary spiritual leadership.
4. Understand various traditions and schools of spirituality in relation to their corresponding spiritual practices and suggested key values (e.g. icon spirituality studied in relation to the practice of meditation with icons and with the values of silence and solitude)
5. Explore a wide range of spiritualities within the context of their historical period, their disciplines and values, as well as their expression within interfaith dialogue (e.g. Judaism, Islam, Christianity and Buddhism)
6. Examine links between perennial themes associated with spirituality, wisdom and leadership - paradox, happiness, suffering, wisdom and wise leadership, flourishing, and contemplation.
|Content||Themes will include a selection of the following:|
Defining spirituality, spiritual practice and spiritual values; Paradigms of the ancient mythic spiritual journey (e.g. Homer's The Odyssey) and the two halves of the spiritual life; Jesus' Jewish spirituality and the spiritualities of the desert ancestors and Orthodox mystics; early Jewish and Islamic spiritualities and practices; Celtic, medieval and contemporary spiritualities; The lives and writings of key spiritual guides such as - Meister Eckhart, Ibn al-'Arabi, Pema Chodron, Teresa of Avila, Abraham Isaac Kook, Gregory Palamas, John Chryssavgis, Lawrence Kushner, Joan Chittister, and Richard Rohr; Connections between the arts and spirituality; Christian and interfaith spiritualities; the spirituality of suffering, illness and death; a focus throughout the course on - spirituality and the search for contemplative practice, happiness, wisdom, flourishing and fulfilment, as applied to the field of professional leadership.
|Transition||Students who have previously completed THEO6016 will not be permitted to enrol in RELT6016.|
