In a number of classic and contemporary films, religious themes such as sacrifice, salvation and apocalypse have been explored with great care and depth. So too, certain films and filmmakers have explicitly drawn upon religious myth and imagery in order to evoke notions of the sacred and transcendent within their own cinematic narratives. This course will explore a sampling of Hollywood and global cinema in order to help students to begin to interpret their visual styles, narrative constructions, historical contexts, and salient religious themes.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Understand a number of cinematic techniques for conveying religious ideas and practices
2. Interpret the cinematic representation of such religious themes as sacrifice, salvation, and apocalypse
3. Analyze the historical and contextual factors that influence particular religious representations in different films
4. Demonstrate advanced writing, research and information technology skills appropriate to religious studies.
Content The course explores the complex relationship between religion and a number of contemporary and classic films.
