Consolidates the knowledge and skills acquired during the period of coursework study by applying them to a practical research project. In Minor Thesis Part I the student commences a relationship with a supervisor with whom s/he will work for the duration of the research project. Part I requires the completion of a literature review, the development of a suitable study protocol and the seeking of approval from relevant authorities.
Students may enrol in Minor Thesis Part I only and complete the remaining parts in subsequent semesters, or may enrol in one or more of the remaining parts concurrently.
| Objectives | At the end of the course, the student will be ready to commence their research project, having: 1. commenced a relationship with a supervisor with whom s/he will work throughout the four parts; 2. conducted a literature review; 3. developed a study protocol; 4. obtained approval of relevant ethics committees or other authorities. |

| Content | Each student is assigned to a supervisor most appropriate to their area of research interest. Supervisors are drawn from academic staff of the School of Medical Practice and Population Health and colleagues from other Schools or health care facilities. Guided by their supervisors, with whom they make regular contact either personally or by telephone or e-mail, students conduct a literature review in their area of interest and develop a study protocol. Each protocol must be approved by the supervisor in consultation with the course co-ordinator. In preparation for the commencement of the research project, the student applies to relevant ethics committees or other authorities. Their approval must be gained before any data can be collected in Part II of Minor Thesis. | ||
